LENT TATTOOS
Lent is a forty-day period before Easter observed by many Christian denominations. Lent is a time of self-examination and personal housecleaning. During this time, many of the faithful commit to fasting, giving up certain luxury items or focus on charitable deeds.
Churches do different things to observe the season of lent, but Chris Seay a pastor at a church in Montrose Texas is doing what some may call crazy. He is creating an art show using an art form that has not been embraced by the church: Permanent Tattoos.
Ecclesia Church – Stations on Skin Art Show
According to Seay, they do an art show every year but this year they wanted to engage an art form that is common among people in our part of the city, and so Stations on Skin was born.
Seay and Ecclesia’s artist-in-residence, Scott Erickson, initially hoped to find 10 people to get inked with designs representing the Stations of the Cross. Turns out the idea wasn’t that crazy after all as about 50 volunteers answered Seay’s call and have been tattooed with Erickson’s custom-designed images of birds, hands, roses, trees and short phrases written in the traditional, Sailor Jerry-style tattoo text.
Montrose is considered the artist capital of Houston. Seay estimates that half the Ecclesia community has a tattoo. With Stations on Skin, the church is able to tell a timeless story in a medium and style that his community can relate to.
